Catching up with a Champion: Joe Solomon

Joe Solomon launched from Lake Itasca in Minnesota in late May with the goal of paddling the Mississippi River from source to sea. Over the summer we've followed Joe's journey down the river, through easy and challenging days, as he paddled to promote mental health and fundraise for Adventure Crew as a Crew Champion. Along the way, he witnessed incredible kindness and generosity of "river angels" who offered food, shelter, laundry, and an encouraging word.

What did Joe tell us he learned most during his time on the river? Patience. He practiced it on "zero days" when he wasn't able to get on the water by instead repacking his kayak and recharging his mind. With patience, Joe persevered through rough times -- an important lesson for us all.

Unfortunately, Joe's adventure was cut short by the arrival and impact of Hurricane Ida. After completing 1,900 miles and being just 450 miles from the Gulf, Joe got off the river in Vicksburg, Mississippi and concluded his paddle -- that is, until spring 2022, when he plans to return to the river and complete the final stretch of the Mississippi. When he does, we'll be here cheering him on!

If you'd like to turn your personal passion for the outdoors into opportunities for city teens, consider becoming a Crew Champion like Joe.
