Meet Our Keynote Speaker
Philip Henderson

At Summits & Horizons, Adventure Crew will welcome Philip Henderson of Full Circle Expeditions, leader of the first all-Black group to summit Mt Everest. This expedition showcases the tenacity and strength of these climbers, and highlights the barriers that continue to exist for communities of color in accessing the outdoors. This historic attempt inspires the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts, educators, leaders, and mountaineers of color to continue chasing their personal summits. 

A native of San Diego, California, Philip’s passion for outdoor education, recreation and being in the mountains has provided him with opportunities to travel, climb and ski around the world. Throughout his career Philip has spent countless hours volunteering for youth and adult programs in the US, exposing them to the power or nature. His work assisting people from Black, Brown and other underrepresented communities get exposed to outdoor activities is highly celebrated, labeling him as a true pioneer in his community.  He has been instrumental in training high altitude workers in Nepal, Kenya and Tanzania and has been a mentor to many men and women working in the outdoor community. He continues to educate outdoor enthusiasts and provide mentorship to many people in the outdoor community and beyond.

Philip’s outdoor accomplishments include:

• NOLS  instructor  1994 - 2016

• Member of the 2012 North Face/National Geographic Everest Education Expedition

• Denali 2005, 2013

• 2018 Led the first All African American climb of Mt Kilimanjaro 

• Member and Expedition Leader of Full Circle Everest Expedition 2022, first all-Black team in history to summit Mt Everest

• Executive Director of Full Circle Expeditions, a Colorado non-profit
