Meet the Crew: Mark Smith, volunteer
Although he's a new volunteer with Adventure Crew this school year, Mark Smith is a familiar face: He's a Hughes alum and a Crew graduate!
Mark started adventuring with the Crew when he was in eighth grade and recalls that he came out with us every month.
"I kept coming back because I liked the outdoors; it was fun; and I was in a safe environment," he said. "It was a place to explore for me."
That feeling of exploration was something that he wanted to share with current Crew teens -- plus, he wanted the chance to give back.
"I wanted to volunteer to help the kids, (to) give them something new in their life that they may not see otherwise (and) share my knowledge with them," he said.
Hiking was Mark's favorite adventure back when he was a student. As a volunteer, he enjoys kayaking.
"I like teaching and helping students learn," he said. "I can be there for the kids and also chill and enjoy the flow of the river with them."
A self-described "Jack of all trades" and "people person," Mark also enjoys art and gardening.
"Mark demonstrates a strong work ethic, positive outlook, willingly accepts any task given and embraces new challenges," Program Director Paige said. "During March roller skating, he was determined to learn skating backwards. We're thrilled to have him back as a volunteer!"
